If there’s one thing many of us would like to do in the world, it makes a difference in the lives of those we love. Think about what people would say about you after you’re gone. It’s not something most of us want to consider, but if we’re going to realize what’s important, then it’s a must. People won’t talk about your nice car. They probably won’t even talk about your amazing job. People remember their experiences with you; the nuggets of wisdom you gave them, and how you made them feel. How can you make sure you make a real difference in the lives of those you love? Read on…
Make Time For People
Making time for people is the number one thing that people struggle with. We all spend hours and hours watching the TV or scrolling through social media – nobody really spends time together anymore! Do your best to make time for those you love. Make sure it’s quality time too. Whether it’s a board game with your kids or a coffee with your partner, make sure they have your undivided attention.
Have Their Best Interests At Heart
Make sure you always have your loved one’s best interests at heart. For example, it can be scary when our children fly the nest, whether it’s to move to their own place or go traveling. However, these are rich experiences that can teach them so much. Rather than trying to convince them to stay, encourage them to go but let them know that you’ll always be there for them and that you expect phone calls and visits! The same goes with any elderly relatives you have. There may come a time when they need home care assistance, or to go into a home. It can be a challenging time, but sometimes it’s the only way to keep them safe.
Don’t Judge Them
If a loved one tells you something, don’t judge them. They came to you because they trusted you and valued your advice – not so you could tell them that they’d been silly, to tell them off, or anything like that! We all make mistakes, but if you can make your loved ones feel like it isn’t the end of the world, you’re bound to make a difference.
Give Good Advice Based On Your Own Experiences
Make sure you aim to give good advice based on your own experiences. Bear in mind that not everybody wants advice – sometimes they simply want somebody to listen to them. However, when you know it’s time to give advice, draw on your own experiences so they know what they need to do.
Lift Them Up
Finally, lift your loved ones up! Don’t be afraid to let them know how much you love them, or how much they amaze you. These words of affirmation can make all the difference to some. Yes, they can be hard to say sometimes, but it’s usually words that people never forget.
How will you make a difference today?
