Control is a word that can be both negative and positive. You don’t want to be controlled by others, and equally, you want to have more control over certain aspects of your life. You might want to gain more control of your weight, your time, and even your career prospects. The trouble is, so many of the things we want more control over are instead controlled or at least influenced, by others. Fortunately, there are ways to take more control of your diet – have you ever grown your own food?

There are many things wrong with shop-bought produce:

Its mass produced so attention to soil health for nutrient value may be lacking

It’s often frozen and stored for months, then defrost as it travels hundreds of miles to you

It’s expensive which puts you off buying it and eating it.

Of course, we all know that eating fresh produce like vegetables is essential for a healthy diet. It doesn’t get any healthier than coming from your own backyard! Best of all, you have complete control over the soil you use, how you control pests and the source of the original bulb or seed. You know you’re getting the best organic and healthy foods available because you have lovingly tended to it from start to dinner plate.

You can even go a step further and take fresh eggs from your yard. You might need to look up which are the best chicken incubators for your needs. Once they have hatched and grown, you can begin to enjoy a more varied diet from your home that you have nurtured from the very beginning. You know what’s gone into the food so you can enjoy better health from the moment you lift your fork.

Looking for a tasty dessert to round off your meal? There is nothing more satisfying that a fresh piece of fruit from your own apple or pear tree. You can grow lots of different kinds of fruit at home. Most of it ripens in the summer time. You can always freeze the produce straight from the tree or plant. Then defrost it as you need it off-season. Turn it into pies or earn some extra income by selling it at a market.

Diets are often too hard to stick to. But if you have all that gorgeous produce right there, you’ll be more inclined to eat it. After all, you don’t want it to go to waste! You might start getting creative with your recipes and find new and innovative ways to include your crop in every meal. Best of all, your own home-grown food cannot be beaten for freshness and nutritional value. As well as gaining more control of your diet, you’ll be able to see some improvements to your health too.

Take back the power in your relationship with food. Use home-grown produce to boost your diet and improve your health. Find tasty recipes for all those eggs and veggies that you’ve worked hard to look after from day one. Enjoy.
