How to Get Your Kids Started With a Youtube Channel

Posted by Kerri Mosher on April 19, 2017 in Blog |

YouTube is all the rage nowadays and with technology advancing as quickly as it does, it can be difficult for us parents to try to understand what the fuss is all about. YouTube is basically a video platform. Unlike channels on television, think of it more like a pick and mix where you can rewind and fast-forward as much as you like. You simply pick a video with a title you like and you can watch it for free (most of the time).

YouTube is popular because it allows anyone, even your children, so go online and share videos with people around the world. It could be a cool stunt that your children did and want to show, it could be some footage of them playing their favorite video game, or maybe they aspire to sing and dance and want to show people their skills. However, there are some obvious security concerns and safety issues that us parents need to consider before getting our children a YouTube channel.

Are my kids allowed a channel?

Yes! But you must always be there for guidance and support. If your children are still small, then make sure you are reviewing their videos before they are allowed to upload them. It’s not illegal for children to create accounts on these social websites as long as you give them consent and that you’re aware of it. However, it’s recommended that you set up an account for them and monitor its usage and moderate comments.

What’s a simple way to get started?

YouTube accounts are connected to Google accounts, meaning if you use Gmail or an android device, you can log in with the same credentials. You’ll want to spice up the main page with things such as a slogan, a funny name and even create channel art to pretty up your videos. Once you’re done, you can start recording videos using a smartphone, camera or even recording software on your computer. Once that’s done, you can use software to edit the video or upload it and change things using YouTube’s built-in editor.

Do I need an expensive computer?

Absolutely not! A basic computer is capable of uploading videos since your phone or camera does most of the work. What do you need, however, is a moderately fast internet upload speed in order to upload the videos without waiting too long. You can ask your ISP what their maximum upload speeds are, but it might cost you more money to get faster speeds.

What kind of equipment do I need?

As mentioned before, you can use either a camera or smartphone to record videos and upload them to YouTube. You can do this directly on a smartphone, making it a great gift for your children. If your child wants to record things on their computer screen, then they’ll need a microphone if they want to speak and perhaps some screen recording software. Most people also get webcams if they primarily use their computer to record footage, but that’s optional if you already have a smartphone.
