Common Family Foods That May Actually Be Harming Your Health

As a fellow parent, I’m sure that you will already know just how important it is to provide healthy and nutritious meals for your family each and every day. This is especially important for young children, as a well-balanced diet will help them to grow and develop well.

 

It is incredibly easy to get into good habits with your family’s diet. You just need to make sure that you are preparing your meals with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. You will also need to include lots of healthy protein sources, such as lean white meat and oily fish. As well as cooking healthy meals, you need to make sure that you are limiting the amount of unhealthy foods that your family is eating.

 

But is there anything that you should totally block from your diet altogether? There are different schools of thought when it comes to this, but there are still a lot of dietitians and nutritionist in agreement that certain foods can be harmful to our health. Most of the time, they are only harmful if we consume them in large amounts. Enjoying them from time to time shouldn’t be too bad for you and your family. But to make sure you have the correct knowledge to ensure you are providing your family with a healthy diet, here are some common family foods that may actually be harming your health. Whether you limit them or stop eating them is totally your call.

Sugary Drinks

 

Even though your kids might love drinking sugary sodas, such as Sprite and Coca-Cola, it is a good idea to limit their daily intake of all this pop. Ideally, you should only be giving them these types of drinks once a week. And when they do have them, make sure that they have no more than one glass at one time. What’s the reason for rationing sugary drinks? It’s because of all the sugar! All the sugar in these drinks is extremely bad for children’s milk teeth, and it will cause them to rot and fall out. Not only that, though, but it will also cause damage to their adult teeth, even if they haven’t come through yet. There is also another bad effect of consuming all that sugar. And that is all the effect that it has on blood sugar levels. Drinking a lot of sugary drinks all the time will keep the body’s blood sugar levels extremely high. If they stay at such a level for so long, then the body is at risk of developing diabetes. Generally speaking, it is very beneficial to keep the sugar content in all your drinks, snacks, and meals down to a minimum as much as possible.

 

Red Meat

 

Protein is an extremely important part of our diets. That’s because the body uses all the protein we consume as a building block. It helps the body to grow and repair itself. For this reason, it is very important that your children are getting enough protein. It can really help them grow up big and tall, not to mention very healthy! However, providing them with a healthy diet isn’t just as simple as giving them any old protein. You need to make sure that the protein they are getting is healthy and lean. The best sources for this kind is white meat, including fish, and grains and pulses. However, there is one source of protein that you should try and avoid in your diet as much as possible: red meat. Most people are confused when it comes to red meat. Sure, it is a great source of iron and vitamin B, but, unfortunately, all of the negative effects of red meat on the body outweigh these positives. Studies show that regularly eating red meat can drastically increase your risks of cancer. And that’s not where the risks end. Other studies show that there is a link between red meat consumption and heart disease and diabetes, because of its high levels of saturated fats.

 

Processed Foods And Ready Meals

 

We all lead such busy lives these days. Work can be hectic, and it can be really hard trying to find the effort to cook proper meals from scratch. It can often be  easier to pick up a convenience meal from the supermarket on your way home from work and to just heat it up in the oven or microwave. Sure, this may save you a lot of time, but it won’t be doing your diet any good. The majority of ready meals are high in sugar and salt, which can be very bad for your health. Not only that, though, but most contain a lot of processed foods and ingredients. Processed foods are ones that have been altered in the packaging process to help lengthen their shelf life. Most of the changes that they undergo can cause dangerous toxins and chemicals to be produced in the ingredients, which can be harmful if you eat them regularly. You will find that your health greatly improves if you try to prepare your meals with fresh ingredients from scratch as often as possible. You should try and stay away from processed meats, such as hot dogs, bacon, and smoked meats. That’s because a lot of additives and preservatives have been added to these, all of which can be detrimental to our health.

 

Refined Carbohydrates

One form of processed foods that is particularly bad for our health is refined carbohydrates. These types of carbohydrates include any that aren’t whole grain, such as white bread. Standard pasta and rice are refined as well. That just means that they have been stripped of all their nutritional value. They don’t have any good stuff left in them! But that isn’t the only problem with these types of carbs. Our body finds carbohydrates particularly difficult to digest and metabolize, especially refined ones. When you eat white bread or rice, your blood sugar levels will spike by quite a bit. This will then quickly dip once you have finished eating. As a result of the spike, you will be at risk of developing diabetes. And you will only feel hungry a lot quicker once the dip occurs. As a result, people who eat refined carbs rather than whole grain ones will feel hungry a lot quicker after eating and will be more likely to spike. Many people find that it is a lot easier to lose weight once they have given up refined carbs.

Tap Water

 

We are all told that fresh water is the healthiest drink that we can drink. It is completely free from sugar and caffeine, so there is no way that it can be dangerous for our health. True? Well, not exactly! It is true that there is no water or caffeine in tap water, so you don’t have to worry about it rotting your teeth or keeping you wide awake at night. However, there are some other things that you need to be concerned about, unfortunately. The Alternative Daily has info on some of the substances in water that we should be worried about. For instance, did you know that there can be traces of prescription medication in our tap water? This is because more and more of us are being prescribed prescription drugs to help us get over various ailments. However, not all of us are completing our courses of medication, and are simply disposing of the leftover drugs incorrectly. In some cases, people are flushing their pills down the toilet! And as this has been going on for a few years now, the level of drugs in the water system has slowly been building up. Contamination in the water system also comes from skin moisturizer creams, shower gels, and shampoos. This is certainly a very concerning issue for us all. Thankfully, there are some steps you can take to reduce your risk of being put at harm from your tap water. The best thing you can do is invest in a water filter. This looks just like a kettle. You pour water in from the tap, and then leave it for a couple of hours in the fridge. Once the water is filtered, it should be very pure and free from chemicals!

Dairy

 

Another problem type of food that some people don’t think is very good for you is dairy. However, this is quite a contentious issue. Some studies show that there are links between dairy and arthritis. However, some studies show that dairy is an important food group that we all need. There are some other arguments for not eating it, though. One of the main ones is that cows are fed foods that contain hormones and other chemicals. There are some scientists who believe that all these chemicals pass through the dairy products and into our system. So is dairy safe or not? That’s probably one that you should research further yourself and make your own mind up!
